L3Harris AN/PVS-31A
The L3Harris AN/PVS-31A Binocular Night Vision Device is a lightweight, articulating binocular night vision system developed by L3Harris in conjunction with U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) as a successor to the AN/PVS-15.
Designed around reduced size and weight, the PVS-31A combines L3Harris unfilmed white phosphor image intensifiers with manual gain control, independently articulating optical pods, onboard and external power capability, and a low-profile helmet-mounted design.
The result is a purpose-built professional night vision system designed for users who prioritize weight, simplicity, and proven L3Harris performance.
Why Choose the AN/PVS-31A?
- L3Harris unfilmed white phosphor image intensifiers
- 2376 minimum FOM
- Manual gain control
- Independently articulating optical pods
- Lightweight, purpose-built binocular architecture
- Onboard AA battery operation
- External battery-pack capability
- Dovetail helmet-mount interface
Lightweight, Purpose-Built Design
The AN/PVS-31A was developed with an emphasis on reducing the size and weight of the helmet-mounted night vision system compared with earlier binocular platforms such as the AN/PVS-15.
Rather than adapting a traditional monocular architecture into a binocular system, the PVS-31A was designed specifically around lightweight binocular operation.
When paired with its external battery pack, battery weight is moved toward the rear of the helmet, helping distribute the overall system weight across the helmet setup.
Articulating Binocular Design
The PVS-31A uses an articulating housing with independently rotating optical pods. Either pod can be rotated away from the eye, allowing the user to operate with both optical channels or a single channel when required.
Single-eye operation can be useful when integrating night vision with other equipment, including handheld thermal devices, or when the user needs one unaided eye.
The articulating pods can also be rotated against the helmet when the system is not being viewed through. This creates a lower-profile stowed configuration and reduces the amount of equipment projecting away from the helmet.
Manual Gain Control
The AN/PVS-31A provides manual gain adjustment, allowing the user to control image brightness based on ambient lighting conditions and personal preference.
This provides additional control when operating across changing lighting environments or when a lower output brightness is desired.
Dual Power Capability
The PVS-31A can operate from an onboard AA battery or from the included external battery pack.
External power allows battery weight to be positioned toward the rear of the helmet while providing power to the binocular system through its external power connection.
The PVS-31 battery pack also incorporates an IR strobe for signaling and identification. The strobe is controlled by a switch located on the rear of the battery pack.
L3Harris Unfilmed White Phosphor
The AN/PVS-31A is equipped with L3Harris unfilmed white phosphor, autogated image intensifiers with a factory minimum rating of 2376 FOM.
L3Harris unfilmed technology is designed to provide strong low-light performance, high resolution, and image quality across demanding lighting environments.
Image Intensifier Options
The AN/PVS-31A is available with two cosmetic-selection options. Both use 2376 minimum FOM L3Harris unfilmed white phosphor image intensifiers. The primary difference is the acceptable cosmetic spot standard.
2376 Minimum FOM — Mil-Spec Spot Specification
- FOM: 2376 minimum
- Standard factory L3Harris configuration
- Maximum of four spots per image intensifier larger than .003 in
- No spots larger than .003 in permitted in Zone 1
- Spots measuring .003 in or smaller are acceptable
2376 Minimum FOM — Aviation Spot Specification
- FOM: 2376 minimum
- Maximum of three spots per image intensifier larger than .003 in, limited to Zone 3
- No spots larger than .003 in permitted in Zone 1 or Zone 2
- Spots measuring .003 in or smaller are acceptable
The Aviation Spot Specification option is intended for customers who want a stricter cosmetic standard while retaining the same 2376 minimum FOM performance requirement.
Small cosmetic spots are a normal characteristic of image intensifier manufacturing. Selecting the Aviation Spot Specification applies a stricter standard to larger visible spots but does not guarantee completely spot-free image intensifiers.
Please note: Aviation Spot Specification systems require additional hand selection and may have substantially longer lead times. Because these systems must be individually selected to meet the stricter cosmetic requirement, availability varies and a definitive lead time cannot always be provided.
AN/PVS-31A vs. BNVD-1531
The PVS-31A and BNVD-1531 are both lightweight L3Harris articulating binocular systems equipped with high-performance unfilmed white phosphor image intensifiers, but their optical and feature sets differ.
The AN/PVS-31A uses a purpose-built lightweight optical architecture focused on minimizing the overall size and weight of the system.
The BNVD-1531 adds adjustable diopters, PVS-14-pattern optics, and an integrated infrared illuminator for users who prioritize those features.
Both platforms provide manual gain, articulating optical pods, onboard battery operation, and external power capability.
Helmet Integration
The AN/PVS-31A incorporates a dovetail mounting interface for integration with compatible night vision helmet mounts.
When paired with an appropriate dovetail mount such as the Wilcox G24, the system can be mounted to a properly configured helmet and connected to its external battery pack for a streamlined helmet-mounted configuration.

These requirements may include the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), or other applicable U.S. laws and regulations.
Customers are responsible for understanding and complying with the export-control requirements applicable to the products or information they purchase, receive, transfer, resell, or otherwise provide to others.
Do not export, re-export, transfer, release, or provide controlled products, technical data, or services to a foreign person, foreign destination, or unauthorized end user without first determining whether U.S. Government authorization is required.
This includes transfers that may occur inside the United States when controlled technical data or other controlled items are released to a foreign person.
What Is ITAR?
The International Traffic in Arms Regulations are administered by the U.S. Department of State's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).
ITAR governs defense articles, defense services, and related technical data identified on the United States Munitions List, as well as certain exports, temporary imports, reexports, retransfers, and other controlled transactions.
