UNDERSTANDING WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

The image intensifier is the heart of an analog night vision system. Housing features matter. Optics matter. Ergonomics matter. But as available light begins to disappear, the characteristics of the intensifier become increasingly important.

Four manufacturers make up much of the market encountered by U.S. night vision buyers: NNVT, Photonis, Elbit Systems of America, and L3Harris.

They don't all use the same technology — and comparing tubes strictly by generation, manufacturer, or FOM does not tell the entire story.

01 // TUBE TECHNOLOGY

GEN 2+ VS GEN 3

One of the most misunderstood parts of night vision is the word generation. A higher generation does not automatically mean every tube from that generation will outperform every tube using earlier technology.

Modern Multi-Alkali Technology

Modern Gen 2-family intensifiers use a multi-alkali photocathode and microchannel plate architecture. Photonis and NNVT products are generally encountered in this category.

Today's premium Gen 2-family tubes can provide excellent resolution, fast autogating, strong performance around artificial illumination, and broad spectral sensitivity.

GEN 3 //

Gallium Arsenide Technology

Gen 3 introduced a gallium arsenide — GaAs — photocathode. This technology provides extremely strong sensitivity in very low-light environments, particularly within portions of the near-infrared spectrum present in night-sky illumination.

Elbit Systems of America and L3Harris are the two major U.S. manufacturers customers commonly encounter in this category.

02 // GEN 3 ARCHITECTURE

THIN-FILMED VS UNFILMED

Gen 3 technology traditionally incorporated an ion-barrier film associated with the microchannel plate. Modern thin-film designs reduce the impact of that barrier while retaining its protective function.

Elbit Gen 3 tubes are commonly encountered as thin-filmed tubes.

L3Harris is particularly known for premium unfilmed Gen 3 technology, where the traditional ion-barrier film is removed. This architecture is designed to maximize electron transmission and low-light performance.

In practical use, the advantage becomes increasingly meaningful as ambient illumination decreases. Under better lighting conditions, the visible difference between two high-quality Gen 3 tubes may be considerably smaller.

NNVT produces modern Gen 2-family image intensifiers at a significantly more accessible price point than premium U.S. Gen 3 tubes.

Depending on model and grade, NNVT tubes can provide a compelling combination of white phosphor, autogating, modern tube formats, and useful performance for customers who don't require maximum passive low-light capability.

PHOTONIS

HIGH-PERFORMANCE GEN 2-FAMILY TECHNOLOGY

Photonis occupies a unique position in the night vision market. Under traditional U.S. generation definitions, its technology remains within the Gen 2 family because it does not use the GaAs photocathode that defines Gen 3.

That does not mean modern Photonis performs like legacy Gen 2. Premium Photonis products are known for excellent autogating, broad spectral response, strong high-light performance, and excellent image quality.

Elbit Systems of America is one of the major U.S. producers of Gen 3 image intensifier technology.

Quality Elbit tubes can deliver excellent low-light sensitivity, gain, SNR, resolution, autogating, and overall image quality. They occupy one of the strongest performance-to-cost positions in professional Gen 3 night vision.

IMPORTANT // Do not buy a tube solely because of the manufacturer printed on it. A high-performing tube from one manufacturer can outperform a lower-performing example from another. The individual tube and its complete specification set matter.

UNDERSTANDING TUBE SPECS

The data sheet gives us a laboratory snapshot of an intensifier's performance. The key is understanding what those numbers actually mean — and not allowing one impressive number to outweigh the rest of the tube.

FOM Figure of Merit

A Useful Performance Range

FOM combines signal-to-noise ratio and center resolution into a single performance metric.

SNR × RESOLUTION = FOM

Example: 32 SNR × 72 lp/mm = 2304 FOM.

FOM is useful for establishing general performance tiers, but it should never be the only specification used to evaluate a tube.

SNR Signal-to-Noise Ratio

One Of The Numbers We Watch Closely

SNR describes the relationship between useful image information and electronic noise.

As ambient light decreases, noise becomes increasingly visible as scintillation or grain. Higher SNR generally means a cleaner image, stronger contrast, and more usable information in very low light.

LP/MM Center Resolution

Fine Detail

Resolution describes how much fine detail the intensifier can resolve and is commonly reported in line pairs per millimeter.

Common values include 64, 72, and higher performance grades. Once resolution reaches a strong level, differences in SNR, gain, EBI, halo, and overall image quality may become more meaningful than simply chasing the highest resolution number.

EBI Equivalent Background Input

The Tube's Background Floor

EBI represents background output from the tube when little or no useful light is reaching the photocathode.

Lower is generally desirable, particularly in extremely dark environments. EBI is also temperature dependent and should not be treated as an isolated measure of overall tube quality.

HALO Bright Source Bloom

Light Source Control

Halo is the bright ring or bloom visible around intense light sources such as headlights, streetlights, or illuminators.

Lower halo is generally desirable because it can preserve more detail around bright sources, particularly in mixed-light or urban environments.

GAIN Light Amplification

How Much Light Gets Amplified

Gain describes how strongly the intensifier amplifies available light.

Higher gain becomes increasingly useful as ambient illumination disappears — but gain must be considered alongside SNR. More gain without adequate signal quality can simply produce a brighter, noisier image.

AG Autogating

Managing Changing Light

Autogating rapidly controls the intensifier as incoming illumination changes.

It helps maintain usable imagery around vehicle lights, streetlights, interior lighting, muzzle flash, and rapid dark-to-light transitions.

MATCH Multi-Tube Systems

The Numbers Need To Work Together

On binocular and panoramic systems, individual tube performance isn't the entire equation.

Quad Defense evaluates tubes as a system, looking for appropriate matching of performance and image characteristics across the build.

WHAT ABOUT DARK SPOTS?

A dark spot does not automatically mean a bad tube. Small cosmetic imperfections can occur during intensifier manufacturing. What matters most is their size, location, and the applicable manufacturer's acceptance criteria.

Center

The center of the image and generally the most visually important area. Cosmetic imperfections here tend to be the most noticeable.

ZONE 2 //

Intermediate

The area surrounding the center. Spots in this region can be visible, but are generally less intrusive than similar imperfections in Zone 1.

ZONE 3 //

Outer Field

The outer portion of the image. Small cosmetic imperfections here can become extremely difficult to notice during normal movement and use.

07 // TUBE GRADING

MIL-SPEC VS COMMERCIAL

One of the biggest misconceptions in night vision is that a commercial tube automatically means an inferior tube. It doesn't.

Image intensifiers are manufactured and graded against different specifications and acceptance criteria. A tube can fall outside a particular contract or grade requirement because of a cosmetic characteristic or individual specification while still providing excellent real-world performance.

This is another reason Quad Defense evaluates the individual intensifier instead of relying solely on the label attached to its product category.

This is where buyers can disappear into the spreadsheet rabbit hole. We look at the complete tube rather than chasing a single maximum number.
