FOM, or Figure of Merit, is calculated by multiplying signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by center resolution. It is useful for broadly categorizing tube performance, but it does not tell the entire story.

SNR, EBI, halo, gain, resolution, cosmetics, photocathode response, and the intended application can all matter when evaluating an image intensifier.

No. Higher FOM can indicate stronger measured performance, but FOM alone does not describe every characteristic of an image intensifier.

Two tubes with similar FOM can have very different SNR, EBI, halo, cosmetics, and overall characteristics. QDEF evaluates the complete performance profile rather than relying on a single headline number.

SNR, or signal-to-noise ratio, describes an image intensifier's ability to distinguish useful image information from visual noise. In general, higher SNR can produce a cleaner, more detailed image, particularly as available light decreases.

SNR is one of the most important specifications to consider, but it should still be evaluated alongside the tube's other performance characteristics and intended application.

EBI, or equivalent background illumination, relates to the background signal produced by an image intensifier and can become more relevant in very dark conditions and certain operating environments.

Halo describes the visible bloom around bright light sources. Lower halo values can help reduce the size of that bloom, but neither EBI nor halo should be evaluated in isolation from the rest of the tube's specifications.

Image intensifier tubes can contain cosmetic spots or blemishes that are visible in the intensified image. Their size, number, and location can vary from tube to tube.

Cosmetic appearance is separate from many of the measurable performance specifications of the tube. If cosmetics are especially important to you, contact QDEF before ordering so we can discuss your requirements.
